My PC Won't Turn On: A Step-by-Step Diagnosis
You press the button and nothing happens. Or the screen stays black, or Windows restarts in a loop and never reaches the desktop. Before you fear the worst, know that a PC that "won't turn on" usually hides a simple cause. Here is a methodical diagnosis, from the obvious to the more technical.
1. Tell the three failures apart
Watch what happens when you power on — it steers everything else:
- No signs of life: no fan, no light. That points to power.
- The PC powers on but the screen stays black: the machine runs, but display or boot is stuck.
- Windows starts then crashes or loops: this is software, and often repairable.
2. Check the power
It sounds obvious, but it is cause number one. Try a different outlet, swap the power cable, and check the switch on the PSU at the back of a desktop. On a laptop, plug in the charger and wait a minute before insisting: a fully drained battery can take time to respond.
3. Do a hard reset
Unplug everything (charger, cables, USB devices), remove the battery if it is removable, then hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual power. Plug back in and switch on. This simple move fixes a surprising number of stuck boots.
4. Unplug peripherals
A USB stick, external drive or printer can make boot fail if the PC tries to start from it. Remove everything except keyboard and mouse, then try again. If it boots, reconnect devices one at a time to find the culprit.
A PC that "won't turn on" is truly dead in fewer than one case in ten. Most of the time it is a specific, repairable fault that costs nothing to fix.
5. Black screen: isolate the display
If the fans spin but nothing shows, connect a different monitor or a different cable (HDMI/DisplayPort). On a desktop with a graphics card, try the motherboard's video output. A plain cable or monitor fault often masquerades as a serious failure.
6. Windows looping: the Recovery Environment
If the logo appears then Windows restarts, force three power-offs in a row (hold power during loading): Windows then opens the Recovery Environment (WinRE). From there, try in order:
- Startup Repair: automatically fixes boot files.
- Safe Mode (via Advanced options > Startup Settings): boots Windows minimally so you can uninstall a faulty driver or update.
- System Restore point: rolls back to an earlier state that worked.
7. Rescue your data first
If nothing brings Windows back, your files are probably not lost. The drive can be removed and read on another PC through a USB enclosure. Top priority: recover the data before any reinstall.
