Slow PC: 7 Real Causes (and How to Fix Them)

"My computer has gotten so slow…" It's probably the sentence we hear the most. The good news: in 9 cases out of 10, the slowness comes from a handful of well-known causes — and none of them requires buying a new PC or installing some shady "accelerator." Here are the real causes, in the order you should check them.

1. Too many startup programs

Every program that launches with Windows nibbles away at your memory and slows down boot. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), go to the Startup tab, and disable everything that isn't essential (updaters, media players, helper assistants).

2. The disk is almost full

A system disk filled beyond 90% suffocates Windows. Empty the Recycle Bin, uninstall what you no longer use, and run the built-in Disk Cleanup. Aim for at least 15% free space.

3. An old mechanical hard drive

If your PC still has a traditional hard drive (HDD), that's often the main bottleneck. Replacing it with an SSD is, by far, the most dramatic upgrade — a PC that used to take 2 minutes to boot does it in 15 seconds.

Slowness is almost never "the PC getting old." It's almost always something specific — and fixable.

4. Too many browser tabs and extensions

The browser is often the real culprit. Every tab uses memory; so does every extension. Close the tabs you don't need, remove the extensions you don't use, and restart the browser regularly.

5. Unwanted software (adware)

Toolbars, "optimizers," fake antivirus tools installed without you realizing: they run in the background and slow everything down. Check the list of installed programs and remove anything you don't recognize.

6. Windows and drivers out of date

Updates fix performance and security bugs. Install any pending Windows updates, and update your graphics-card driver.

7. Not enough memory (RAM)

If you open lots of applications at the same time and Task Manager shows memory maxed out, adding RAM can transform the experience — especially below 8 GB.
