Transfer Your Data From an Old PC to a New One
A new PC is exciting — right up until you realise that years of files, bookmarks and software are still on the old one. The migration is nothing to fear if you do it methodically. Here is how to leave nothing behind and start out on a clean machine.
1. Take stock of what matters
Before copying anything, list what you genuinely need: the Documents, Pictures, Videos and Downloads folders of course, but also the places people forget — the Desktop, templates, and above all files kept outside the standard folders. Note the software you actually use too: there's no point reinstalling everything.
2. Choose your transfer method
- External hard drive or USB stick: simple and reliable, ideal for large volumes. Copy onto one, plug it into the other.
- Cloud (OneDrive, Google Drive): handy if your data fits the available space; everything re-syncs to the new PC once you sign in.
- Local network: if both PCs share the same Wi-Fi, folder sharing avoids any physical media.
3. Don't forget what isn't a "file"
The classic trap is the data that isn't obvious at first glance:
- Browser bookmarks and passwords: sign in to your Chrome, Edge or Firefox account on the new PC and everything syncs. Otherwise, export the bookmarks to an HTML file.
- Email: if you use a mail app, export the accounts and folders; on webmail there's nothing to do.
- Software licences: note your product keys before you wipe the old PC.
Never wipe the old PC until you have opened and checked your files on the new one.
4. Reinstall software, don't copy it
Programs can't be moved by copying their folder: they embed themselves deep in Windows. Download the latest versions from the makers' official sites and reinstall cleanly. It's a chance to declutter and skip the software you never opened.
5. Verify before you erase
Once the copy finishes, open a few files on the new PC: a document, a photo, a video. A transfer can look complete when a folder was missed or a file got corrupted. Only reset the old PC after this check — and, if you can, keep a backup around for a few weeks.
6. Wipe the old PC safely
If you're selling or giving the old machine away, don't just delete your folders. Use Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC and choose to remove everything, which erases your personal data and returns Windows to a fresh state.
