What exactly is Windows Defender?
What many people still call "Defender" is now named Windows Security, built around the Microsoft Defender antivirus. It is built in, free and on by default in Windows 10 and 11. It does far more than scan: it provides real-time protection, a firewall, an anti-phishing filter in Edge (SmartScreen), ransomware protection through controlled folder access, and boot-time checks.
Is it actually any good?
Yes. The independent labs that test antivirus products (such as AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives) regularly rank Microsoft Defender among the strong performers, with detection rates close to the paid suites. For everyday use, browsing, email, office work and the occasional download, it does the job without dragging the machine down.
Where it stops
Defender guards very well against malware, but security is not just an antivirus. It does not replace:
- A password manager for unique, strong passwords.
- A VPN if you often use public Wi-Fi.
- A regular backup, the only real defence against ransomware.
- Your own vigilance: no antivirus stops you from willingly typing your password into a fake site.
The best antivirus is still an attentive user; the software is only a safety net.
Should you pay for a suite as well?
