Windows Update Stuck: How to Get Updates Working Again
An update frozen at 0%, a download that will not budge, or an error code that keeps coming back: Windows Update can be stubborn. The good news is that the cause is almost always fixable without reinstalling the system. Here is what to do, from the simplest step to the deepest.
First, patience (really)
Some major updates sit at a given percentage for a long while, especially on a mechanical hard drive. Before anything else, leave the machine alone for 30 to 60 minutes, plugged into mains power. A percentage that looks frozen may simply be processing thousands of files in the background.
The basic moves that often unblock it
- Restart the PC, then check for updates again under Settings > Windows Update.
- Check disk space: an update needs several gigabytes free. Empty the Recycle Bin and the Downloads folder if needed.
- Check the connection: a Wi-Fi drop interrupts the download. Move closer to the router or switch to a cable.
- Make sure the date and time are correct: a wrong clock breaks verification with Microsoft's servers.
The built-in troubleshooter
Windows ships with a dedicated repair tool. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then run the one for Windows Update. It stops the relevant services, tidies up the components and starts fresh. In many cases this alone unblocks a stuck update.
A stuck Windows Update is almost never a "dead" system: it is a cache that needs resetting.
Clearing the update cache
When a downloaded file is corrupted, the update loops forever. The fix is to start over: stop the Windows Update service, empty the SoftwareDistribution download folder, then start again. In practice, open Services (services.msc), stop "Windows Update", clear the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download, restart the service and check for updates again. Windows will re-download clean files.
Repairing system files
If parts of Windows are damaged, the update fails with an error code. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run, in order, sfc /scannow to check the system files, then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth to repair the Windows image. Restart, then try the update again.
The clean last resort
If a single update stays impossible, you can download it manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog using its "KB" number. And if the whole update system is broken, an in-place repair upgrade (a reinstall that keeps your files and apps) resets everything without losing your data.
