Deep-Clean Your PC Without Shady Software

"Clean your PC in one click!" You have probably seen the ads. The trouble is that most of these free "cleaners" slow a PC down as much as they claim to speed it up, throw up fake alerts, and sometimes bundle other software behind your back. The good news: Windows already ships with everything you need for a safe, effective clean-up. Here is the method, in the right order.

Why to avoid miracle "cleaners"

A real clean-up means removing junk files and freeing memory, not "fixing 2,347 errors" as these tools like to promise. Those numbers are invented to frighten you into buying a paid version. Worse, many of them touch the Windows Registry, a sensitive area where one wrong move can stop the PC booting altogether. The rule is simple: use the built-in tools. They are free, tested by Microsoft, and you will never need anything else.

Step 1 — Disk Cleanup

This is your starting point. Click Start, type "Disk Cleanup" and open the tool. Pick your system drive (usually C:), then tick the categories: temporary files, Recycle Bin, thumbnails, error reports. Next, click Clean up system files to reveal old Windows installations, which can take up several gigabytes after a feature update.

Step 2 — Turn on Storage Sense

So you never have to think about it again, go to Settings > System > Storage and enable Storage Sense. It automatically empties the Recycle Bin and the Downloads folder on a schedule you choose. This is the clean-up that "runs itself", with no third-party software involved.

The Windows Storage settings show you exactly what is taking up your disk.

Step 3 — Uninstall what you no longer use

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Sort by size to spot the big forgotten programs, and by date to find things you installed once and never touched again. Remove toolbars, trial games and utilities you do not recognise. Every program you take off means space reclaimed and, often, one fewer background process.

A clean PC is not one that some tool has "optimised" — it is one you have cleared of what no longer earns its place.

Step 4 — Clear temporary files and caches

Under Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, tick the update caches, setup files and thumbnails, then remove them. On the browser side, clear the cache from the settings of Chrome, Edge or Firefox: it is often several hundred megabytes that then reload on their own.

Step 5 — Tidy the Desktop and Downloads

A Desktop buried in icons slows the display and makes finding anything harder. Create a few folders (Documents, Pictures, Installers) and move your files into them. The Downloads folder is usually the heaviest: keep what is useful and delete the installers you have already run.

Step 6 — Lighten the startup

A full clean-up includes the programs that launch with Windows. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), the Startup tab, and disable anything that is not essential. Your disk will be lighter and your boot faster.

Step 7 — Optimise your drives

On a mechanical hard drive (HDD), defragmenting regroups scattered files and restores smoothness. Type "Defragment" in the Start menu to open the Optimise Drives tool, then run an analysis. Good news: on an SSD, Windows does not defragment — it runs an automatic TRIM instead. You have nothing to do, and certainly no third-party software to install to "optimise" the disk.

What you must never "clean"

Steer clear of any tool that promises to "clean the Registry" or "repair DLLs": the performance gain is nil and the risk of breakage is real. Likewise, never manually delete files inside the Windows or Program Files folders — always go through a proper uninstall. A real clean-up removes clutter; it never touches the core of the system.

The shortcut: let Yuna7 do it

This checklist takes attention, several windows and a little care not to delete anything important. That is exactly why we built Yuna7: you simply say "clean my PC", and the AI inspects the disk, temporary files, unused apps and startup items, applies a safe clean-up, and shows you every step. Nothing sensitive is removed without your approval — you confirm, it acts.
