Webcam and Mic Not Working on Video Calls
The meeting starts, your screen stays black and nobody can hear you. Don't panic: in the vast majority of cases the webcam and mic work fine — it's a setting blocking them. Here are the checks to run, in order, before your next call.
1. The silliest cause, and the most common
Check the hardware first. Many laptops have a physical shutter or a webcam switch: make sure it's open. On headsets and keyboards, a mute button is easily nudged by accident. If it's a USB device, unplug and replug it, ideally into a different port.
2. Windows privacy permissions
This is the number one cause of black cameras. Windows can block camera or mic access for every app. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera, then make sure "Camera access" is on and "Let apps access your camera" is on too. Do the same in the Microphone section. Scroll down the list: your video app must be individually allowed.
3. The right device in the app
Zoom, Teams, Meet and the rest each keep their own settings. Open the app's audio and video settings and check the correct camera and correct mic are selected — not a phantom device or an old webcam. These apps almost always show a video preview and a mic level meter: use them to test.
4. One app at a time
The webcam can only be used by one app at a time. If Teams is already running in the background, Zoom will show a black screen. Close every other video app, along with any browser tabs that may have grabbed the camera, then relaunch the one you need. On a laptop, a second external webcam plugged in over USB sometimes becomes the default device without warning: if so, select the right camera explicitly inside the app rather than trusting the automatic choice. The same goes for the microphone, where a headset, a monitor's built-in mic and the laptop's own array can all compete for the default slot.
Nine black cameras out of ten are not a fault: it's a disabled permission, or another app hogging the device.
5. The device and its level in Sound
If you can't be heard, open Settings > System > Sound. Under Input, pick the right mic and speak: the volume bar should move. Raise the input volume if it's too low. Also check that no app has the mic muted in the Volume mixer.
6. Drivers, as a last resort
If the device appears nowhere, open Device Manager (right-click the Start menu). Look for the camera under "Cameras" and the mic under "Audio inputs and outputs". A yellow exclamation mark flags a driver problem: right-click, Update driver. A plain restart also clears a fair share of these issues.
The Bluetooth headset trap
A Bluetooth headset can switch into "hands-free" mode the moment the mic is used: the sound then turns tinny and quality collapses. In Settings > Sound, check which device is active and, if quality falls apart, switch back to the PC speakers with a separate mic, or reconnect the headset.
Finally, test everything before the meeting, not during it. Windows includes a Camera app: open it to confirm at a glance that the picture appears. For the mic, the Settings > System > Sound page shows a level bar that moves when you speak. Two ten-second checks that spare you the awkward silence at the start of a call.
If nothing else works, sign out and back in, or restart the PC before joining: a fresh session releases any device a crashed app was still holding on to. It's the least glamorous fix, and surprisingly often the one that works.
