Slow Wi-Fi: 8 Tips to Boost Your Connection

The video keeps pausing to buffer, pages drag, the call freezes. Before you blame your provider, know that the Wi-Fi itself is often the real bottleneck. Here are 8 practical tips, from the simplest to the most technical, to get fast, stable speeds back.

1. Position your router well

Wi-Fi radiates in every direction and struggles through concrete, water and metal. Put the unit up high, somewhere central and clear — not in a cupboard, behind the TV or on the floor. Every wall you remove between you and the router is speed gained.

2. Use the 5 GHz band

Recent routers broadcast on two bands. 5 GHz is much faster but has shorter reach; 2.4 GHz reaches far but congests quickly. Near the router, connect your devices to the 5 GHz network (often named with a "5G" or "_5GHz" suffix). Keep 2.4 GHz for distant rooms.

3. Change the Wi-Fi channel

In a block of flats, dozens of networks pile onto the same channels. Most routers pick a channel automatically, but not always the best one. In your router's admin panel, force a less crowded channel (1, 6 or 11 on 2.4 GHz), or trigger auto-selection with a reboot.

4. Restart and update the router

A full router restart (off for 30 seconds) clears its memory and often restores normal speed. Also make sure its firmware is up to date: providers push fixes that improve stability and speed.

Router placement often matters more than the size of your plan.

5. Extend the coverage

If a room stays in a dead zone, a range extender, a mesh Wi-Fi system or a powerline kit (which travels over the electrical wiring) fixes it. Mesh is the cleanest way to cover a large area without dropouts as you move around.

Slow Wi-Fi is almost never fate: it's an obstacle, interference or a setting — three things you can fix.

6. Free up the bandwidth

A game update downloading, a cloud backup, another device streaming in 4K: all of it eats your speed. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), Performance > Wi-Fi tab, to see network activity, and pause big downloads at important moments.

7. Update the PC's Wi-Fi driver

On the computer side, an outdated Wi-Fi adapter driver caps performance. Open Device Manager, "Network adapters" section, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, Update driver. If a network stays temperamental, "forget" it in Settings then reconnect.

8. Compare against your plan's speed

Run a speed test next to the router, then in the problem room. If the result near the router is far below what your plan promises, the issue is the line, not the Wi-Fi. For demanding use, a simple Ethernet cable remains unbeatable for speed and stability. It costs a few pounds, needs no configuration, and completely sidesteps interference, distance and congestion — the three things that slow wireless down in the first place. For a desktop that never moves, or a games console next to the router, there is rarely a good reason not to use one.

Secure your Wi-Fi network

Slow Wi-Fi sometimes hides an intruder: a neighbour connected to your network eats your bandwidth without you ever seeing it. Make sure your network is protected by WPA2 or WPA3 encryption and a strong password, and change the default password on the router's admin panel.

Also disable features you don't use, such as WPS, and take a look at the list of connected devices in your router's interface: it's where you'll spot any unknown hardware to kick off the network.

One last check: an old router simply can't keep up with modern speeds. If yours is more than five or six years old and predates the Wi-Fi 5 standard, upgrading the router alone can transform a connection that a dozen tweaks couldn't save.

The shortcut: let Yuna7 do it

Band, channel, driver, hungry devices, speed test: diagnosing slow Wi-Fi means hopping from one setting to another. You tell Yuna7 "my Wi-Fi is crawling": the AI measures your real speed, spots interference, updates the driver and switches to the best band, then shows you the before/after. You approve anything touching the network, it optimises.
